A lovely Jub-ilee family fun day
Sovereign Housing Association and local community groups stepped out in style at South Ham’s Russell Howard Park to help local residents celebrate Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee.
It was all about the community as over 250 residents gathered to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee at a free fun day last week (Tuesday 31 May), aimed at bringing the community together. A host of inspiring, local, charitable groups and volunteers with their family and friends joined in the fun events and activities organised to celebrate this momentous occasion.
The newly formed South Ham Residents group mingled with residents to talk about their hopes and aspirations for the community. Supported by Sovereign’s Communities team to get them started, they’re an independent group providing a voice for all South Ham residents and they’re keen for more people to get involved.
The event began with a few words from Sovereign’s Community Officer, Stevie Chadwick, who said: “What an amazing turnout! To have so many residents and community groups joining together to enjoy a fun filled day is simply wonderful. I’m so pleased to be working in this community with its amazing residents, charities and community groups and looking forward to what we can achieve together in the future.”
The afternoon’s success was largely due to the charities and volunteers who gave up their time to get involved. Our valued local partner, Westside Community Centre, provided delicious cakes and refreshments while youngsters could get creative with Inspero’s seed bombs and painting local men’s group, The Shed’s spectacular array of bird boxes they could take home. Those wanting to quench their thirst were invited to create their own smoothies on Pedal Power’s smoothie bike with further healthy advice and fun activities provided by the NHS Healthier Communities engagement team.
Howard Park Bowls Club introduced bowling to all ages and special appearances from NickMagic and our two royal guests ensured everyone got in the party spirit!
Matt Buckham, Communities Director, Sovereign said: ” It’s great to hear South Ham Residents have used this event to engage with the wider community on what matters to them and have fun at the same time. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved in your community through our partnerships and team so if you’ve got a great idea for your community project or would like to get a bit more involved in your neighbourhood, get in touch.”
