Trainee roles

Looking for a career which will make a real DIFFERENCE to people’s lives?

To help us develop our own talented people, we recruit a number of trainees to work across the organisation in our customer services, housing and maintenance teams.

As a business, we help people in housing need by providing quality affordable homes. Looking beyond bricks and mortar, we invest in communities and support residents to achieve their aspirations. We need trainees to help us achieve this. Learn more about Sovereign.

Our trainee programme offers individuals with relevant work or life experience to build on current transferable skills. This role is suitable for people looking at a career change or to refresh knowledge.

We recruit throughout the year.

Each trainee is individual in the experience they have, so once you’ve joined us, we develop a suitable training plan. Trainees follow a programme of learning to enable them to be fully competent in their new role. This could include study at a college for a formal qualification, internal training or external short courses. A trainee role can extend up to two years but may be shorter if applicable.

We’re looking for people who have an interest in working for us and who share our values. In return we offer a real opportunity to make a life change.

Our trainee programmes are a great way to enable people who have been working with us through other programmes such as Women in Trades or work placements. They’re also ideal for residents who have been working with our Communities or Employment and Training support teams to get  into work or progress to a better job.

We’re interested in recruiting people who:

  • Are self-motivated
  • Able to solve problems and to prioritise work
  • Responsible
  • Diversity-aware
  • Communicate well with other
  • Have great relationship skills
  • Show practical skills (which could be via personal projects as well as work)

As a kid I dreamed of being an interior designer. I always had a pencil in my hand, sketching and drawing everything from cartoons to still lifes. After leaving school I went to college, taking a Diploma in Art & Design. When I’d finished college, though, I wasn’t quite sure where to go next.

I worked in retail before I came to Sovereign. It was just a job, not a career like I have now. I had a friend who worked at Sovereign and he told me how much he enjoyed it, so I applied for the adult learner apprenticeship. I convinced the interviewers to take me on by showing them work I’d done in my own home.

Have you considered an apprenticeship role too?

An apprenticeship builds skills through on-the-job supervised training and classroom education. They attend college (for up to four years) to achieve a vocational qualification. We offer apprenticeships to applicants of any age.
