Pests

Pests are vermin which can carry disease harmful to humans, and include wasps, bees, fleas, bed bugs, mice, rats, cockroaches, feral pigeons, and ants.

How can I avoid a pest problem?

Keeping your home clean and tidy, ensuring communal areas are clear and disposing of waste responsibly will all help in avoiding a pest problem. A lack of upkeep can cause pest infestation and escalate the problem, making pest removal difficult to eradicate and stop entirely.

Pests in my home or communal areas

Pest problems are unpleasant in the home – and it’s important to deal with them as soon as possible to stop infestations getting worse.

Customers are expected to take appropriate action if minor pests are found in  your home - for example, treating an ant infestation with ant powder. If you notice any pests in communal areas, please report them to us as soon as possible.

For more serious pests in your home, it’s best to check your tenancy or lease agreement to determine who is responsible for removing them. Your Local Authority’s pest control department or Environmental Health team can offer help and advice, or SNG will get involved if:

  • the Local Authority has deemed that there is a statutory nuisance which they consider SNG are responsible for dealing with
  • there is an infestation in several connected properties
  • the infestation is in a communal area
  • the pest was proven to be present at the point of letting
  • it’s as a result of a defect in the home.
